A 'Bounty' Of Confusion At Procter & Gamble

Walk into any grocery store and you will be amazed at the dozens of ways Bounty paper towels are packaged. In sizes ranging from regular, big, large, giant, super, jumbo and varying numbers of rolls per package, it is anything but simple when it comes to purchasing paper towels. To complicate matters, Bounty is sold in different configurations in competing stores and has a luxury (yes, really) offering called DuraTowel. Priced at about twice the cost of Bounty’s basic paper towel, DuraTowels come in different color packaging and are often located apart from Bounty’s other products.

According to the article, P&G's line extension strategy has slowed its sales compared to competitors such as Unilever. The suggested formula to boost sales would then be to become innovative again. What would you consider an innovation for products like paper towels and dish detergents? In your first 90 days as the new Chief Innovation Officer, what are the issues you would like your team to work on?

Your late fees are waived: Blockbuster closes

"Be kind, please rewind," the signs used to say in video stores, urging customers to return their rented VHS tapes spooled back to the beginning.
If only Blockbuster could rewind back to the 1990s.

That was the time when the video chain was the colossus of the movie-rental business, with stores in seemingly every city shopping district and suburban strip mall in America. Visiting the store was a weekly rite for many people, who would show up on Friday evenings to check out the latest releases, navigating a crush of couples and families who had exactly the same idea -- only to find out that the last copy of "Air Force One" or "The Lion King" had already been snagged.

1 - In what measure has Blockbuster failed to understand that customers' needs were changing?

2 - What is the panorama that the digital era is shaping for the movie entertainment industry?

Ryanair unveils new strategy - 'be nice to customers'

Ryanair, Europe's biggest budget airline, has promised to transform its "abrupt culture" in a bid to win customers from costlier rivals, admitting for the first time that a reputation for treating its passengers badly might have become a problem.
The Irish firm, this week voted the worst of the 100 biggest brands serving the British market by readers of consumer magazine Which?, said on Friday it would become more lenient on fining customers over bag sizes and overhaul the way it communicates.
If customers are not willing to pay less for an unfriendly customer relationship anymore, how Ryanair is supposed to change its BM's building blocks to implement a "be nice to the customers" strategy?

Sales Are Colossal, Shares Are Soaring. All Amazon Is Missing Is a Profit

"Amazon will sell many more cookie dropping machines than I will, but even if you buy from me instead of Amazon it will earn a commission on the sale and the shipping,” said Hyo Lee, the owner of Commercial Food. “Now you know why Amazon’s sales have gone from $34 billion in 2010 to $61 billion in 2012.”
Still, she noted that Amazon was building dozens of warehouses across the country and hiring tens of thousands of employees for them. “It has all these fixed costs now,” she said. “I think they’ll have to start charging more for shipping.”

Albeit its stock is at record high, Amazon lost money in 2012, and analysts anticipated another loss when the company released its third-quarter results last week. Even though its incredibly soaring sales, the company is missing profits.

Thus, do you think that the model of putting down profits for the sake of growth will be able to pay off for the company in the next future?

And, if not, what could be Amazon possible alternatives in shifting and innovating its business model?"

Fixing BlackBerry Would Be Enormous Task for Lenovo

After putting itself up for sale in August, BlackBerry reportedly has a new interested buyer: Chinese tech behemoth Lenovo.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation, reports that Lenovo is considering a bid to purchase the entirety of BlackBerry, the struggling handset maker that has seen its share of the market for smartphones plummet. Once the hottest hand in mobile devices, BlackBerry has seen its market share of smartphones dwindle to around 3% as Google and Apple have risen. Previous reports from Bloomberg and Reuters indicated that companies including SAP, Cisco, Samsung, and Google have been interested in buying BlackBerry in parts. Aside from devices, the company makes operating systems for distributed systems. Other interested parties reportedly include BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis and Cerberus Capital Management LP. BlackBerry and Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., one of the company’s biggest shareholders, reached a preliminary buyout deal of $4.7 billion last month.
1) If Lenovo acquires BlackBerry, how will the mobile-phone landscape change?

Aeroflot to Open Low-Cost Unit After EasyJet, Wizz Enter Russia

OAO Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, plans to establish a discount division at a cost of $100 million over two years after specialist no-frills operatorsEasyJet Plc (EZJ) and Wizz Air Ltd. targeted its home market. The Dobrolet unit will commence domestic services next spring using eight Boeing Co. (BA) 737-800 planes -- the same model employed by Ryanair Holdings Plc -- Aeroflot Chief Executive Officer Vitaly Savelyev told reporters in Moscow today.

Read more at: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-10/aeroflot-to-open-low-cost-unit-after-easyjet-wizz-enter-russia.html

This event recalls what management theorists usually define as a band-wagon effect or even an exchange of threat. In other words, once being attacked in your own territory you respond by imitating your competitors and/or by attacking them with their own "weapons". Previous attempts by established airlines to imitate low costs have almost always failed (ex. Song airline of Delta Air Lines).

Do you think Aeroflot will be successful in winning this game?
Is it sufficient for a differentiator like Aeroflot to simply copy an established low cost model (such as the Easyjet and the Ryanair ones)?

The Fatal Mistake That Doomed BlackBerry

BlackBerry’s failure to keep up with Apple and Google was a consequence of errors in its strategy and vision. First, after growing to dominate the corporate market, BlackBerry failed to anticipate that consumers — not business customers — would drive the smartphone revolution. Second, BlackBerry was blindsided by the emergence of the “app economy,” which drove massive adoption of iPhone and Android-based devices. Third, BlackBerry failed to realize that smartphones would evolve beyond mere communication devices to become full-fledged mobile entertainment hubs

1) What would have been for BlackBerry the best alternative to stay competitive within its industry?
2)How much important has been for BlackBerry the incapacity of riding the transition from the corporate world to the consumer market?

Taking a bite out of Apple

IT FEELS more like a rock concert than a press conference as the casually dressed chief executive takes to a darkened stage to unveil his firm’s sleek new smartphone to an adoring crowd. Yet this was not the launch of the new iPhone by Apple on September 10th, but of the Mi-3 handset by Xiaomi, a Chinese firm, in Beijing on September 5th. With its emphasis on snazzy design, glitzy launches and the cult-like fervour it inspires in its users, no wonder Xiaomi is often compared to its giant American rival, both by admirers and by critics who call it a copycat. Xiaomi’s boss, Lei Jun (pictured), even wears jeans and a black shirt, Steve Jobs-style. Is Xiaomi really China’s answer to Apple?

Xiaomi is a very interesting company, which is growing in China.
Nevertheless, its business model has yet to prove its validity in the home market, therefore threats to Apple are still seen as weak.
We would like to hear your opinion, so please make sure that at least one person of your group replies to the following questions here on the blog.

Compare Apple and Xiaomi strategies.
1. How important do you think has the external environment been in pushing the two companies pursue their strategies?
2. Were the decisions taken by Xiaomi at the functional, business or corporate level?

Abercrombie & Fitch’s direct-to-consumer business mainly includes its e-commerce channel.

Leaders without followers

AS THE movers and shakers head to the Swiss mountain resort of Davos this week for the annual World Economic Forum, their credentials as global leaders look anything but resilient. Their official theme will be “resilient dynamism”, whatever that means, but what they ought to be talking about is the low level of trust the public has in their ability to do anything useful. The annual "Trust Barometer" survey published by Edelman, a public-relations firm, reports widespread scepticism about the ethics practised by political and business leaders. The lowest scores were when those surveyed were asked if they trust leaders to “tell the truth, regardless of how complex or unpopular it is”: only 18% trusted business leaders, whilst government leaders scored a yet more miserable 13%.

China again is growing but more slowly

GUANGZHOU, China — After a sharp economic slowdown through much of last year, China’s economy is growing again — but not at its previous double-digit pace, and with signs that inflation might become a problem again.
Shops were crowded this past weekend, construction sites show renewed activity and factories are hiring as exports and domestic demand recover — trends all underlined by government data released over the last several days.

Life's remote control

The smartphone is no longer just a portable computer in your pocket. It has become the remote control for your life. Want to flip off the living room lights, unlock your front door or get a reading of your blood pressure? All of this can be done through mobile apps that work with accessories embedded with sensors or an Internet connection.

For several years, technology companies have promised the dream of the connected home, the connected body and the connected car. Those connections have proved illusory. But in the last year app-powered accessories have provided the mechanism to actually make the connections. That is partly because smartphones have become the device people never put down. But it is also because wireless sensors havebecome smaller, cheaper and ubiquitous.

The spatial diffusion of technology

Technology disparities are critical for explaining cross-country differences in per capita income. Despite being non-rival in nature and involving no direct transport costs, technology diffuses slowly both across and within countries. Even when a technology has arrived in a country, it takes years and even decades before it has diffused to the point of having a significant impact on productivity. Why does technology diffuse slowly? How do we explain cross-country differences in its speed of diffusion? In this paper, the authors study the diffusion over time and space of 20 major technologies in 161 countries over the last 140 years. The spatial effects they identify for technologies vanish over time. For most technologies, this implies that the effect of geography is initially strong, decays over time, and eventually disappears. This is the first paper to document these patterns in adoption rates for a large number of technologies and countries. Estimates provided of structural parameters can be used to inform spatial theories of growth. Key concepts include:

  • This paper uses a new data set of direct measures of technology to study technology diffusion across time and space.
  • Technology diffuses slower to locations that are farther away from adoption leaders.
  • Interactions are more frequent for more recent technologies.
  • Understanding technology diffusion over space is crucial to understand the speed of technology diffusion.
  • Evidence on the significance of the spatial and temporal links in technology adoption could prove helpful to stimulate future research in these areas.

Don't just change the way people live, change the way they think.

Professor Mukti Khaire's challenge to management students is lofty, even by Harvard MBA standards. Don't just change the way people live, change the way they think. Change culture.

In her new elective course, Creative High-Impact Ventures: Entrepreneurs Who Changed the World, Khaire looks at ways managers can team with creative talent in six "culture industries": Fashion, publishing, art/architecture/design, film, music, and food. Her subjects include fashion pioneer Chanel, publishers Penguin and Atavist, film icons Variety and the Sundance Institute, Indian art auction house Saffronart, and food businesses Whole Foods and the James Beard Foundation. http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/7157.html

La bolla universitaria americana

“Mi sono laureato in interior design nel 2011, all’Art Institute of California di San Francisco. La laurea costava più di 100 mila dollari. Ne ho spesi ‘solo’ 80 mila perché ho ottenuto la convalida di alcuni corsi, frequentati in precedenza a U.C. Davis”.

Joseph Stiglitz and climate change

9 Ways To Prove Joe Stiglitz Is Right About Climate Change Hurting The Economy

iPhone Low Cost

NEW YORK - Un iPhone economico.
